Trades Helpers and Labourers

Trades helpers and labourers help skilled tradespeople do their jobs more quickly and efficiently. They also work doing general labour tasks on construction and other jobsites. Building trades helpers assist trades people by handling materials, keeping the worksite clean, using basic hand and power tools and assisting with basic construction, renovation and maintenance tasks.

Future Prospects:

These occupations will continue to be impacted by natural resource development in the NWT. As a result there will be high employment levels during these projects. Most of these jobs will be medium-term, and fall slightly over the long term.

Current Workforce:

Approximately 5.6% of workers in this occupational group are women. About 39.7% of employees working in these occupations live in Yellowknife, 25.5% live in the regional centres of Inuvik, Hay River and Fort Smith and 34.9% live in other communities. About 41.5% are employed in the Construction industry and 12.1% in the Retail Trade sector.
